What better scarf to write about, than Julia Abadie’s, Plumes et Grelots, one of the many much loved Winter-themed designs.

At the heart of this scarf lies a collection of ornate horse-drawn sleighs and carriages. In the early nineteenth century, these elegant conveyances became all the rage among affluent Europeans, particularly after their travels to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Captivated by the city’s winter splendor and the enchanting sight of the Neva River gliding beneath a blanket of snow, many were inspired by the “unusual” modes of transportation used by the locals. This newfound fascination with sleigh travel swept through Western Europe’s high society, leading to a surge in commissions for extravagant and luxurious sleighs, despite their limited seasonal use.

To further evoke the spirit of this era, I encourage you to watch “L’Odyssée de Cartier,” a captivating short film and 2012 advertisement by Cartier. Featuring a mesmerizing scene set in St. Petersburg, it perfectly captures the essence of this bygone era, transporting you to a winter wonderland of sleigh rides and ultimately, to the heart of Paris.
