If you love horses, you will undoubtedly love the Panache & Fantaisie carré, which was designed by the talented Hugo Grygkar and issued for the first time in 1959.
Hugo Grygkar not only designed the very first carré for Hermès, but he also became Hermès’ most prolific artist. You can read more about the life of this artist and his profound influence on the Hermès Carré on my blog by following this link.
Like many early Hermès designs, the Panache & Fantaisie celebrates horses, a recurring motif that reflects the House’s equestrian heritage, born from its origins as a harness and saddle maker. The design draws inspiration from a specific artifact – a harness adorned with a sleigh bell – now proudly displayed as part of the Emile-Maurice Hermès Collection.

This fashionable harness was part of a coordinated ‘dress’ for the horse, designed to complement the Christmas decorations of the accompanying carriage. These stylish harnesses often included plumage and bells, adding a touch of festive cheer during the holiday season.
